Party Wall Matters

Some kinds of work carried on a property may be covered by the Party Wall etc. Act 1996.

The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 makes provision in respect of party walls, excavation and construction in proximity to certain buildings or structures.

This includes work which involves:

  • work on an existing wall shared with another property

  • building on the boundary with a neighbouring property

  • work involving excavating near a boundary

It is essential to understand the obligations to notify adjoining owners and to be aware of the circumstances under which a dispute can arise. For further information on the Party Wall Act 1996 there is an explanatory booklet available from planning portal.

We have experience in interpreting the Act and in acting as party wall surveyors. Our services include:

  • Advising on which parts of the Act applies in particular development

  • Serving the necessary notices on adjoining building owners

  • Dealing with any disputes arising

  • Acting as a joint surveyor

  • Publishing Party Wall Awards
