Slough Hindu Temple Extension and Community Space

Slough Hindu Cultural Society | Community Architecture Project

Located in the Borough of Slough, an area well known for its vibrant and well-established South Asian community, this project involves the renovation and extension of an existing Hindu temple to better support the cultural and community needs of local residents.

After more than five years of dedication from the Slough Hindu Cultural Society to secure planning permission, the project will transform the existing temple through a carefully designed first-floor extension and roof redesign. The development will provide modern facilities that enable the temple to expand its role as a hub for religious worship, cultural activities, and community engagement.

Designed in accordance with traditional Hindu architectural principles, the proposal extends the building vertically by adding an additional storey. This approach allows the temple to increase its functional capacity while respecting the constraints of the existing site.

The ground floor will continue to serve as the primary prayer and meditation space, preserving the spiritual heart of the temple. The newly created first floor will provide flexible community facilities, including rooms dedicated to traditional dance, music, and language education. These spaces will enable the temple to support a wide range of activities that celebrate and preserve cultural heritage.

Importantly, the new facilities will also help foster intergenerational learning, allowing younger members of the community who have grown up in the UK to connect with their cultural traditions, language, and customs.

Total Contract Cost: £2.8 million
Site Area: 2,400 m²
New Total G.I.A: 1,600 m²

Architectural Design

The architectural design carefully balances the need to respect the existing suburban character of the surrounding area while incorporating distinctive elements of traditional Hindu temple architecture.

A key feature of the design is the inclusion of Shikhara spires, which will rise above the roofline and establish the building’s clear Hindu identity. These architectural elements will create a distinctive landmark while still maintaining harmony with neighbouring buildings.

A detailed 3D visualisation of the proposed temple design was produced by Alpha, who recently joined Saloria Architects and created this architectural rendering as his first professional project.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

In line with Saloria Architects’ commitment to sustainable design, the project will significantly improve the environmental performance of the building.

A large array of roof-mounted solar panels will generate renewable energy for the temple, helping reduce operational energy costs and carbon emissions. These improvements support the principles of Sanatan Dharma, which emphasise harmony with nature and environmental responsibility.

Delivering a Community Vision

Projects that serve large and diverse communities require careful collaboration and communication. Saloria Architects is working closely with the Slough Hindu Cultural Society to ensure the design reflects the aspirations of the community while meeting planning, design, and construction requirements.

Drawing on extensive experience delivering large-scale community and cultural projects, Saloria Architects will guide the project through the construction phase with a focus on quality, efficiency, and delivering the client’s long-term vision.
